Relay at T2 Domestic Terminal
The new Relay store at T2 was perhaps the most difficult yet satisfying project we have worked on in a while. One of two projects we've just completed at T2, Relay was designed by Thought Space for LS Travel Retail (the other project was Hub Convenience Store). The Relay fitout is an expansive airside giftshop that came with more than it's fair share of challenges.
Not long after ASF received the contract for the fitout works the Airport requested the client modify their original ceiling design as provision for supporting structure wasn't being made. The re-design featured 200 lineal metres of criss cross steel beams, purlins and columns with all the steel to be clad in gyprock and painted. The slight twist inherent in steelwork meant packing every one prior to applying the gyprock cladding.
The rest of the fitout includies gondolas, book cases, large drink fridges, two pak red painted feature panels, dark grained veneer column claddings, fantastic graphic designs, Stonini specialised claddings, feature signage walls, all sitting under the beam structure with an open roof area over.
The end result was a major achievement of structural engineering in the service of architecture; we were still able to achieve the feel of a bright open large and very inviting shop.
